Improving Patient Care: MPOG Membership at UW-Madison

The University of Wisconsin Department of Anesthesiology joined the Multicenter Perioperative Outcome Group (MPOG) in September 2021. MPOG is a consortium of academic and private institutions that share data and knowledge to improve patient care through research and quality improvement. MPOG recently announced Dr. Kelly McQueen, as a New Executive Board Member.

Prior to attaining membership, the Department had a long-term interest in MPOG. The rigorous process of setting up access to this large database was primarily tackled by our MPOG Site PI’s and ASPIRE Quality Improvement Champions, Dr. Eva Lu-Boettcher and Dr. Colin Boettcher.

Since the 2021 launch, our institution has been extremely active with MPOG – from departmental faculty membership in ASPIRE for CME and active projects involving residents – to participation on multiple committees nationally. Dr. Eva Lu-Boettcher explains, “We plan for opportunities within MPOG to grow over time, particularly within areas of research.”

Dr. Colin Boettcher adds, “Our departmental membership helps our providers track their performance and engage in new research for national anesthesia patient safety initiatives. Because of our participation, we can regularly evaluate important metrics to ensure that our patients receive the safest anesthetic care possible.” Both doctors noted that our membership is particularly helpful in building collaborative ties with other institutions to share knowledge, expertise, and ideas to better improve our patient outcomes. “When we are continuously informed about how we perform as clinicians in and out of the operating room,” they continued, “we can transfer this information to better patient care.”
