The UW Department of Anesthesiology offers advanced clinical and research training in a variety of fellowship programs. A carefully designed fellowship can enhance the academic environment of the department and positively impact the experience of residents at all levels of the program. We have structured our fellowships toward that goal, with individualized combinations of advanced clinical experience, basic science and clinical research, supervisory experience, and resident and student teaching.

Clinical Subspecialty Training

The goal of our clinical subspecialty training programs is to provide in-depth clinical training in all aspects of a given subspecialty. Fellowship opportunities are available in critical care medicine, pediatric anesthesia, neurosurgical anesthesia, cardiothoracic and vascular anesthesia with echocardiography, ambulatory anesthesia with training in administrative medicine, regional anesthesia and acute pain management, and transplant anesthesia. Qualified applicants for these programs will be Board eligible in anesthesiology and possess a history of clinical and academic excellence.

The anesthesiology/critical care medicine and pediatric anesthesiology fellowships are ACGME accredited, and successful fellows will be eligible for subspecialty Board certification.

Research Training

Fellowship appointments are available for training in basic, translational, and clinical research. The Department supports active research programs in anesthetic mechanisms, neuroscience, pain, and perioperative pharmacogenetics along with clinical research projects in cardiac and neuroanesthesia and critical care. The institution participates in the NIH funded Clinical Investigator Preparatory Program, creating additional opportunities for research fellows.
